Shock Horror – Hollywood Steals Storyline…!

Avatar really just Pocahontas?

Avatar really just Pocahontas? from http://www.themovieblog.com/2010/01/avatar-really-just-pocahontas

While Avatar is storming the worldwide box office, it seems that people cannot stop over analysing its many ‘sub-themes’.

Some sites, such as ‘Stop Avatar’ suggest that Avatar is clearly promoting a heterosexual future, which to them, automatically assumes negative connotations towards homosexual behaviour. Some even more ridiculous people are suggesting the film promotes racism, due to the dominant figures coming to the rescue of an ethnic minority. I did say ridiculous didn’t I?

Some more accurate people suggest Avatar’s a more blatant attack on America (Human=American, Na’vi=Iraq, Unobtanium=Oil). With James Cameron being a Canadian native, this is probably the most acceptable accusation, and he may have a point.

However, there’s a far more obvious scandal to be lifted from the Avatar phenomenon and it appears only a few have noticed. One of these few being ‘themovieblog.com’ who hilariously note how James Cameron must have pitched the film: “Pocahontas in the future”.

When you compare the two side by side the similarities are so frightening, its pretty undeniable. To be fair, Hollywood has to find its ideas from somewhere and a lack of writing talent appears to be forcing remake after sequel after reboot. That or the fact they can make guaranteed box office millions, for minimal effort. Another point to bear in mind is that the natural resource sub theme has never been more relevant than right now.

That being said, you would have thought in the 15 years the film was in development, yes 15 years, one would create something with some originality. That’s what you get for exerting all your effort on the visuals. Those of you who are good at maths (and Pocahontas fans) will notice that 15 years takes Avatar’s development to 1994; one year before Pocahontas release! (According to wikipedia, one can never be sure!)

Does this mean that Pocahontas is actually the thief!? Can it be!? Probably not. The ultimate irony is that despite this clear theft of creativity, the plot line is Avatar’s biggest pitfall. So the moral kids, if you’re going to steal, at least make an effort to disguise yourself. Oh and make it better.

After all, you don’t steal an essay of the internet and not make any changes.

Watchout

  1. I never noticed this! Shocking!

I have to disagree about the lack of talent though.
